Bringing Pets to Your Marbella Property: What You Need to Know
PlanMarbella App
Many buyers planning to spend time at their Marbella property want to bring their dogs or cats. Here is what the rules are and how to make it work when buying property in Marbella.
Marbella is dog-friendly
Spain is generally a pet-friendly country and Marbella is no exception. Dogs are welcomed in many restaurants (outdoor terraces especially), most parks, and on the streets. The expat community has a high proportion of dog owners, and you will find veterinary practices, pet shops, and dog groomers throughout the municipality. If pets are part of your family, Marbella accommodates them well.
Bringing pets from the UK post-Brexit
Since Brexit, bringing pets from the UK to Spain requires more preparation than previously. The process involves: your pet must be microchipped, must be vaccinated against rabies (at least 21 days before travel if it is the first rabies vaccination), and must have an AHC (Animal Health Certificate) issued by an official veterinarian in the UK no more than 10 days before travel. The AHC replaces the EU pet passport for UK-to-EU travel.
Dogs also need a tapeworm treatment by a vet 1-5 days before entering the UK on return (this applies to UK re-entry, not to entering Spain). Plan the paperwork timeline carefully - if you are bringing a pet to your Marbella property for the first time, speak to your vet at least a month in advance.
Checking community rules for pets
Some gated communities in the Marbella area have restrictions on pets - particularly on the number or size of dogs allowed. Before buying property in Marbella if you have large dogs, check the community rules (estatutos) explicitly. A community that prohibits dogs above a certain weight can be a problem that is difficult to fix after completion.
Practical living with pets in Marbella
Beaches in the Marbella municipality have designated dog-friendly sections (typically outside the main bathing areas). Parks are generally accessible. Outdoor dining is often pet-permissible. The main adjustment is the summer heat - dogs need shade, water, and walking at cooler times of day. Early mornings and evenings are the right times for dog walks in July and August.

Do I need an EU pet passport to bring my dog to Spain from the UK?
Post-Brexit, you need an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) rather than an EU pet passport. The AHC must be issued by an official UK veterinarian no more than 10 days before travel. Your pet must be microchipped and vaccinated against rabies. Speak to your vet at least 4-6 weeks before travel to allow time for any required vaccinations.
Are dogs allowed on beaches in Marbella?
Dogs are restricted from the main bathing beaches during the summer season (June to September). Designated dog-friendly beach areas exist at several locations in the municipality. Dogs are generally welcome on beaches outside the designated bathing zones and outside the main summer season.
Can I have a large dog in a Marbella apartment or urbanisation?
Check the community rules (estatutos) of the specific development before buying. Some communities restrict dog ownership by size or breed. This is not universal - many communities welcome all dogs - but it is worth verifying specifically rather than assuming.
