Healthcare in Marbella for Property Owners and Expats
Free App
Healthcare is one of the first practical questions when buying property in Marbella. Here is what the system actually looks like for foreign residents and non-resident owners.
The healthcare landscape in Marbella
One of the most common concerns people raise when thinking about buying property in Marbella - especially for extended stays or relocation - is healthcare. The good news is that the Marbella area has genuinely good medical infrastructure, both public and private. It is not something that should put you off.
Public healthcare in Spain
Spain has a universal public healthcare system that is broadly excellent. As a registered resident contributing to Spanish social security (through employment or self-employment), you access the public system through a GP assigned to your health centre, and from there to specialists and hospitals as needed.
Non-residents and those not yet registered in the public system have more limited access. Emergency care is always available regardless of status. Routine and non-emergency care for non-residents typically requires private insurance or payment.
Private healthcare in Marbella
The private healthcare system in the Marbella area is well-developed and is used by the majority of international buyers and expats. There are several private hospitals and clinics in and around Marbella, including facilities with English-speaking consultants across all major specialties.
Private health insurance in Spain is significantly cheaper than equivalent cover in the UK. A comprehensive policy for an adult in their 40s typically costs 80-150 euros per month. For families, the costs scale but remain manageable. Many expats in Marbella find private healthcare not only more accessible but faster and often higher quality than what they experienced through the NHS.
The EHIC and GHIC for visitors
If you are a UK national visiting Spain without having established residency, your Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC - the post-Brexit replacement for the EHIC) covers emergency and medically necessary treatment in the Spanish public system during your stay. It is not a substitute for travel insurance, and it does not cover non-urgent private treatment. But for short-stay owners, it provides useful emergency cover.
What we did
We took out private health insurance for the whole family as soon as we were spending significant time in Marbella. It made a real difference - when one of the children had a minor injury during a summer visit, we were in a private clinic being seen within an hour. The experience was genuinely good. We have continued renewing every year without hesitation.

Can I use my EHIC or GHIC card in Spain?
UK nationals can use their GHIC card for emergency and medically necessary treatment in the Spanish public system. It does not cover routine private care, dental, or non-urgent treatment. It is also not a substitute for comprehensive travel or health insurance for extended stays.
How much does private health insurance cost in Spain?
For a healthy adult in their 30s or 40s, expect to pay 80-150 euros per month for comprehensive private cover with a good network of hospitals. Prices increase with age. Family policies provide better value per person. Compare policies from Sanitas, AXA, DKV, and Adeslas - all operate widely in the Marbella area.
Is there a good hospital near Marbella?
Yes. The Marbella area has several private hospitals including Hospital Quironsalud Marbella, Hospital Ochoa, and the HC Marbella International Hospital. Malaga city is 50 minutes away and has larger public and private hospitals with more specialist departments.
