Driving in Spain as a Marbella Property Owner: What You Need to Know
PlanMarbella
Most buyers in Marbella will want a car. Here is what owning and driving in Spain looks like for non-residents and residents, and what changes when buying property in Marbella.
Driving in Spain as a non-resident property owner
As a non-resident owner spending time at your Marbella property, you can drive using your home country driving licence for visits. UK driving licences are recognised in Spain for non-residents visiting the country. The six-month rule applies - after six months of continuous stay, you need a Spanish licence.
If you become a Spanish resident
Once you register as a Spanish resident, you are required to exchange your home country driving licence for a Spanish one within two years. For UK licence holders post-Brexit, this requires a practical driving test in Spain in addition to the administrative exchange (the reciprocal agreement that previously allowed direct exchange without a test was disrupted by Brexit and not fully restored). EU licence holders can typically exchange their licence administratively without retaking a test.
Buying or using a car in Marbella
Most long-term property owners either bring a car from their home country for use during stays, hire a car for visits, or buy a Spanish-registered car locally. Buying a Spanish-registered car is relatively straightforward with your NIE number. Used car dealers in the Marbella area are familiar with international buyers. The local roads are generally good - the A-7 coastal highway and AP-7 toll motorway connect the coast efficiently.
Traffic and parking
Marbella traffic in summer can be significant on the coastal road (A-7), particularly between Puerto Banus and the town centre at peak times. The AP-7 toll motorway provides a faster alternative. Parking in Marbella town centre and Puerto Banus in summer is challenging - underground car parks are the practical solution. Most residential urbanisations have dedicated parking included with properties.

Can I drive in Spain with a UK licence?
Yes, as a visitor or non-resident, UK licence holders can drive in Spain using their UK licence. If you become a Spanish resident, you must exchange your UK licence for a Spanish one within two years. Post-Brexit, this exchange requires passing a Spanish practical driving test for UK holders.
Can I bring my UK car to Spain for extended stays?
UK-registered cars can be used in Spain for up to six months in a 12-month period by non-residents. For longer stays or once you establish Spanish residency, Spanish registration is required. Re-registration of a UK car in Spain involves ITV (Spanish MOT equivalent) and import procedures handled by specialist agents.
Is having a car essential in Marbella?
For most of the Marbella area, yes. Public transport exists but does not serve the urbanisations well. Taxis and ride-hailing apps (Uber operates in the Marbella area) cover most journeys but can be costly for regular use. A car is effectively essential for anyone spending meaningful time at a property outside the old town or main town area.
